Ingredients With Purpose

"What's in it?" That is the question that I am asked the most.  It is even more important than the classic "How much is it?". My answer is always the same: My base of 7 oils are Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Soybean Oil, Organic and Sustainable Palm Oil, Organic Olive Oil, Castor Oil, Cocoa Butter, and Shea Butter not in any particular order.

Each oil was chosen for their properties in the soap that would allow me to create a bar of soap that I would be happy with. I choose organic oils to reduce the amount of exposure to pesticides and other unnecessary chemicals. This is a must when making a product for my son's skin which is already inflamed and has cracks in it due to the eczema. Irritated skin is more prone to infections as it's natural defense system as a barrier is compromised so it must be protected.

My main concern is the feel of the skin after the bath or shower. It should feel clean, soft. Never tight or itchy.  I have found that the combination of oils that I use work well together and creates a hard bar of soap which I can customize with the colors and additives that I choose. This particular recipe took a while to perfect and I am proud of the time that I took to create one that I really enjoy.

Each ingredient has a particular purpose in the bar. Each oil either helps to create lather, maintain lather, soothe the skin, provide nutrients, maintain hardness of the bar, and balance the fatty acid profile of each soap. I will discuss each ingredient that I use in another more detailed post dedicated to that particular ingredient because I tend to use some, for instance, coconut oil in many of my products and they really deserve their own floor. Until then, have a Soapy Day!!!
